MEDIA, Pa. — As Shawn Webb prepares to graduate on May 10, he reflects on his time at Penn State Brandywine and the unique experiences he had.

“When I was looking into colleges to attend, Brandywine really stood out to me. I really liked the tour I had with Myeisha Matos (recruitment, retention and alumni coordinator for Brandywine Athletics), and I liked the feel of the campus. It felt like home,” Webb said.

“I liked how Brandywine is a small community. I went to a small high school, so I was already used to that setting, and I thought it’d be pretty easy to fit in and get to know people.”

During his time at Brandywine, Webb was an outfielder on the baseball team, with a career batting average of .306 and 64 runs batted in. He was named to the Penn State University Athletic Conference All-Academic team three years in a row.

“The people I’ve met through the baseball team, whether it’s coaches or players, are people who will be my lifelong friends and people I could see at weddings and other gatherings down the line,” he said.

Webb also held an internship at i-core networks, a technology vendor management company. He landed the internship with the help of Chris Bradley, a Brandywine Advisory Board member.

“I interned at i-core networks last summer. It was a good mix of sales, technology and engineering, which is the route I want to take post-graduation,” he said. “My degree is in engineering, but I also work full-time in sales outside of school and baseball. The internship helped me solidify what I want to do after I graduate.”

Webb said one of his greatest accomplishments during his time at Brandywine was building the friendships he made on the baseball team.

“I’ve had a lot of success both academically and athletically here. I’ve gotten awards, made the All-American team, and all that kind of stuff. But my greatest accomplishment was building friendships with my teammates and other people on campus,” he said.

“Those are connections that are going to last me a lifetime. I can look at an award and think, ‘That was cool,’ but that’s not going to last as long as the friendships I made here.”

Upon graduating from Penn State, Webb will be staying local to work in the King of Prussia area and moving down South later down the line.

When reflecting on his favorite memory from his time at Brandywine, Webb recalled his trips to Florida for baseball spring training.

“Going to Florida my first year was when I came out of my shell. I got to know more of the guys on the baseball team and we started hanging out more from there,” he said. “The spring training trip is a great way to hang out with guys you don’t get to talk to as often, whether it’s pitchers, infielders or outfielders. It’s a great way to build friendships.”

Webb said one of the most valuable lessons he learned at Brandywine was balancing his work with baseball and school.

“I’m a full-time engineering student with a full-time job who also plays baseball, which is a lot, but one thing I learned how to do was manage my time effectively. I made sure my assignments were done, I didn’t miss or go late to practice and never missed a shift,” he said.

“I do have rent to pay and I just bought a new car, so it’s a lot for me to handle. But the biggest lesson I learned was how to manage all that while still having a social life and not missing out on events.”
