Let’s talk trash: #PSUBWgarbology

Penn State Brandywine has chosen “Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash” as its campus Common Read book for the 2015-16 academic year. During the upcoming fall and spring semesters, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to read the book, come together for several events based on the book’s philosophies and themes, and chat about the book and campus sustainable practices on social media by using the hashtag #PSUBWgarbology. Several professors from various academic disciplines will also assign the book in their classes, using it as part of their course curriculum.

“Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash,” written by Edward Humes, raises awareness about trash consumption. This book was chosen by Penn State Brandywine’s Common Read committee to raise awareness, galvanize action and spark conversation about how to dispose of trash, how it affects the economy and the environment, and how Penn State Brandywine can change the impending negative consequences of current trash-related behaviors.

All students, faculty, staff, campus guests, alumni and friends are encouraged to use the #PSUBWgarbology to tell Brandywine’s story of its sustainable practices, showcase positive actions taken based on themes in the book, document activities at campus events, and/or share examples of how Brandywine is becoming a more sustainable campus. Suitable posts relating to the hashtag theme will be gathered and shared on this page.

The campus Common Read was created to provide an opportunity for the entire Brandywine community to participate in knowledgeable conversation about a shared text, allowing the campus to develop a dialogue focused on one central idea or question. This supports Brandywine’s goals of developing a common experience among its students, promoting a strong overall campus culture, and supporting communication, collaboration and creativity across campus.

“Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash” is available for purchase in the Penn State Brandywine bookstore.
