When I was in first grade, I wanted to be a crossing guard "when I grew up" just like my mom.  By third grade, I moved on to higher aspirations and decided I wanted to be a flight attendant so that I could travel the world. By the time I went to college, I thought I'd like to be an engineer. My parents and I thought this was a good use of my math skills. I quickly discovered, though, that my science skills were lacking and then changed my major to Information Technology.  My parents placed a high value on education and encouraged me and my siblings to pursue professional careers. My mother encouraged me and my sisters to break the gender barriers that existed in her generation, and so was very supportive of my interest in male-dominated careers.

I received an associate's degree in Information Technology and made a successful career in this field as a trainer, programmer and systems analyst (at a community college, a large insurance firm and in my husband's small business). Then came motherhood, my next career, and eventually a desire to change careers to a helping profession (a skill I discovered through volunteer work I was doing).  I returned to school and received my bachelor's degree in Human Resources and then a Master of Science in Pastoral Counseling from Neumann University.  I chose this program because I was eager to counsel others, especially through major life transitions, and appreciated this holistic approach which intertwined the teaching of psychology and spirituality.

While in this program, I was still unclear about my specific career path. Through the guidance of my adviser, career counselor, three internships and a Transitions workshop, I was able to recognize my true passion. I returned to work in higher education, this time helping students and alumni through the major transition of figuring out their next step and best fit in the world of work. Having been through several transitions of my own, I'm passionate about helping others through these anxious yet exciting times.

In working with students and alumni, my approach is student-centered, culturally sensitive, holistic and barrier-breaking.  I encourage experiental learning and "planned happenstance".
