Brandywine athletics week in review: Feb. 1-7

MEDIA, Pa. – With basketball season quickly winding down, both of Penn State Brandywine’s basketball teams picked up key Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) victories last week, aiding the teams in their hunt for the postseason.

The men won for the first time on the road this season, earning an 85-76 victory at New Kensington on Sunday. Freshman point guard Naifes Smalls recorded his first-career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore forward Cyrie Spencer posted a team-high 21 points.

Brandywine, which also suffered an 80-52 loss to Mont Alto earlier in the week, currently sits in eighth place in the PSUAC, but is tied in the loss column with DuBois and Worthington Scranton for the final conference tournament spot.

The Lions have four league games remaining over the next seven days, three of which are on the road, beginning tomorrow at third-place York.

The Brandywine women recorded a resounding 98-66 victory over Mont Alto on Wednesday. All five starters scored in double figures, led by senior Jilly Gledhill’s 15 points.

The Lions enter the final week of the in sixth place in the league standings. Brandywine will play four conference games in seven days beginning with Tuesday’s road trip at York.

Brandywine has reached the PSUAC Tournament semifinals each of the last nine seasons, but will likely need to win a road game in the quarterfinals to extend its streak to 10 this winter.
