On Jan. 8, 2011, a tragedy occurred in Tucson, Ariz. where 19 people were shot, six of whom lost their lives. Among the survivors is Tucson native and former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. The man recognized with saving the congresswoman's life, Daniel Hernandez, Jr., will speak about his heroic experience at Penn State Brandywine at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, in Room 113 of the Main Building.
While studying political science at the University of Arizona, Hernandez served as the congressional intern for Giffords' office and attended the constituent meeting held in a supermarket parking lot where the shooting occurred. Thanks to quick thinking and bravery, Hernandez was able to help save Giffords, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
During his visit to the Brandywine campus, Hernandez will give a moving and exhilarating speech that focuses on overcoming difficulty. He will discuss how growing up an Hispanic American and identifying as a gay man has shaped his life and empowered him. He will also share tips on how to secure internships at high levels and what it was like working for Giffords.
Penn State Brandywine Assistant Director of Student Affairs Ronika Money is excited to have Hernandez on campus to share his story.
"He is someone that is not that far from our students' age," she said. "I think it's great for our students to hear from one of their peers ? the most important message is no matter where you are in life you still have the opportunity to make an impact and empower others."
