7th grade girls participating in STEM program

STEM Options

Introduced over twenty years ago at Penn State Brandywine as the Math Options Program, the newly revamped STEM Options Program, piloted in 2016, provides seventh grade girls with a one-day intensive STEM immersion program to encourage their future pursuit of a STEM education and career. Peer-reviewed research has identified junior high as a critical age when girls lose interest in STEM subjects, but suggests that exposure to female role models and hands-on learning in STEM could increase the likelihood of girls’ future pursuit of STEM. By utilizing the unique characteristics of Penn State Brandywine and by inviting professional women to campus across STEM disciplines, the STEM Options Program aims to provide these unique learning opportunities and increase the scientific, quantitative, and digital literacy among middle school girls in southeastern Pennsylvania.

In 2018, the STEM Options Program will be expanding to include a one-day program for ninth grade girls, providing an opportunity for a deeper exploration and engaging STEM topics.

Our seventh grade STEM Options Program will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2018.
Our ninth grade STEM Options Program will be Friday, June 1, 2018.
