ENGL 197: Writing in the Disciplines Tutorial

ENGL 197: Writing in the Disciplines Tutorial

ENGL 197 is designed to support writing across the curriculum at Penn State Brandywine and is best suited for students in any class with a significant writing component, including humanities, social sciences, and STEM courses.  Students work with an experienced writing tutor for one hour per week in a one-on-one setting.  Students and tutors identify writing goals, improve their writing process, and learn the conventions of writing in specific disciplines through practicing specific writing techniques and forms.  ENGL 197 promotes educational opportunity at Penn State Brandywine and supports the campus in its mission to recruit and retain motivated students who will lead productive lives.

Goals of ENGL 197

  • Students become more motivated, confident, and independent thinkers and writers in a non-threatening, empowering writing space.
  • Students take responsibility for their writing through active participation in tutorial sessions.
  • Students understand that writing is highly situated and depends on each discipline’s specific ways of knowing, analyzing, and communicating information.
  • Students recognize the expectations and goals of different rhetorical situations by learning the genres and writing conventions in their particular disciplines like BIOL, CAS, COMM, ENGL, HIST, HDFS, and PSYCH, among others.
  • Students improve their overall writing skills through effective strategies for all phases of the writing process: brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and proofreading.
  • Students integrate writing as an essential part of their learning process, sustained across their academic careers.
