John Tierney received his B.Sc.(hons) in Chemistry from Reading University (UK), M.Phil. in Chemistry from the Hatfield Polytechnic (UK), and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Temple University (USA). Dr. Tierney's organic chemistry research is focused on the synthesis and characterization of sulfur nitrogen heterocycles. This work has resulted in a number of papers in peer-reviewed journals with undergraduate student coauthors. He is also engaged in pedagogical research focused on introducing mini-projects into the freshman chemistry lab curriculum, and into the non-science major’s courses.

Dr. Tierney was a recipient of the Penn State Brandywine’s Jane Cooper Award in 2004 and the American Chemical Society Merck Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education in 2006. In recognition of his accomplishments at Penn State, Dr. Tierney was promoted to full professor in 2008.

Outside of the classroom, Professor Tierney is an active member of Fairmount Rowing Association, in Philadelphia, having rowed since the age of 13. He was Team Leader for the US Olympic Rowing team in Barcelona in 1992. In 1991, Dr.Tierney was also Team Leader for the Pan Am Rowing team, and as part of that he had the opportunity to meet and have dinner with Fidel Castro, the highlight of the year. He was also Team Leader for US Rowing Teams at the World Championships from 1986 through1990.
