Johanna E. Lombard received her B.A. in Mathematics and her Associate degree in Higher Education from the University of the Orange Free State in South Africa. Before she immigrated to the United States she was the head of the Mathematic department at the celebrated Three Rivers High School in her hometown of Vereeniging. She taught Mathematics for 17 years prior to moving with her family to Delaware County in 1994. She has been teaching Mathematics at the Penn State Brandywine campus since 1999. She has a passion for helping students improve their mathematics skills during the crucial phase after graduating from high school. Therefore, she is extremely motivated to find various improved teaching methods to enhance the students’ problem solving skills and to make college algebra concepts more meaningful to students. Knowing that students acquire knowledge and skills at different times, rates and ways, she has found that one proven teaching method is frequent revision of mathematical concepts, time permitting. Amongst other teaching methods, co-operative groups, problem solving, etc. are useful to reinforce understanding and retention. She has been involved with the Learning Center on campus to help challenge students of different levels with their mathematic skills.
Professor Lombard enjoys travelling, wildlife, photography, watching tennis and reading among other hobbies.
