"It cannot be doubted that in the United States the instruction of the people powerfully contributes to the support of the democratic republic; and such must always be the case, I believe, where the instruction which enlightens the understanding is not separated from the moral education which amends the heart."
-- Alexis d' Tocqueville, (Unknown)
The Laboratory for Civic Engagement is an exciting new venture started in fall 2011 with a mission of integrating campus intellectual talents with those of the community.
To enhance student engagement through the application of concepts, content, and skills from their academic disciplines in and out of the classroom, while meeting a need in a community, civic, or non-profit organization through volunteering to service learning and civic engagement. The content knowledge and skillsets of the staff, faculty, alumni, and greater Brandywine community are included to make a positive impact in the local-to-international community.
Penn State Brandywine will be recognized as a center of excellence for the integration of learning and scholarship with community engagement. The integration of these activities is a powerful tool for enhancing student learning, creating a stronger Penn State Brandywine community of scholars and leaders for a more just society.
The establishment of the Laboratory for Civic Engagement would not have been possible without a generous donation from David and Marjorie Rosenberg.
